How to Use SF 901 CUI Cover Sheets
SF 901 CUI Cover Sheets are used to help identify, cover, and protect physical documents containing Controlled Unclassified Information. Place the SF 901 Cover Sheet on top of printed CUI documents, folders, binders, clipboards, document stacks, traveler packets, or files that are being reviewed, transported, stored, or staged in a work area.
These cover sheets are especially useful for offices, manufacturing floors, engineering departments, program management teams, reception areas, conference rooms, and any environment where employees print, handle, review, or move CUI documents. The visible purple CUI cover sheet helps alert employees, visitors, auditors, and other personnel that the attached material requires proper safeguarding.
To use, place the SF 901 Cover Sheet as the top page of the document packet. If needed, use the available fields to identify applicable CUI categories, limited dissemination controls, special instructions, points of contact, or handling notes. Keep the cover sheet attached while the document requires protection, and store covered documents in an approved location when they are not in active use.
SF 901 Cover Sheets should not replace required CUI markings on the underlying document. Instead, they add an additional layer of visibility and protection by helping prevent casual observation and making CUI easier to recognize during daily operations.
For a more complete CUI document handling setup, pair SF 901 Cover Sheets with CUI folders, CUI restricted area signs, CUI authorized destruction container signs, CUI media labels, and CUI authorized-only floor tape.
Best used for: printed CUI documents, document packets, folders, binders, work instructions, drawings, travelers, contract files, engineering documents, quality records, and other physical paperwork containing CUI.
32 CFR 2002.20(a)(8) states that, “When it is impractical for an agency to individually mark CUI due to quantity or nature of the information, authorized holders must make recipients aware of the information's CUI status using an alternate marking method that is readily apparent.” This affords authorized holders with considerable flexibility in marking CUI, but does not change the fundamental obligation to ensure the information is marked as CUI and contains necessary marking elements.
The guidance in CUI NOTICE 2020-3 clarifies the elements such alternative marking methods must still include and provides additional details for making use of some alternative methods. In a manner that is readily apparent to users and recipients, all alternate marking methods must:
(1) Include a CUI designation indicator (as described in 32 CFR 2002.20(d)) and the DoD CUI Marking Aid, DOPSR20-S-2093.
(2) Convey the information’s status as CUI.
(3) List any CUI Specified categories contained in the document or transmission.
(4) Convey any applicable distribution statements or limited dissemination control marking.
(5) Convey any special handling, marking, or dissemination requirements called for by the underlying law, regulation, or Government-wide policy related to the CUI Specified category.
Authorized holders may use alternate marking methods when transmitting CUI to external entities. If using alternate marking methods, Authorized holders do not have to place CUI markings in banners or as described in the CUI Marking Handbook or DoD CUI Marking Aid, DOPSR20-S-2093. In lieu of applying CUI markings as described in the New DoD CUI Marking Training Aid or DOPSR25-P-0275, Authorized holders may instead apply a statement that includes or addresses all of the elements described above. The Authorized holder may use the CUI Coversheet (Standard Form 901), transmittal documents, or emails to satisfy the marking and identification requirements when using alternate marking methods. In such cases, the Authorized holder does not have to mark attachments or enclosures.
Utilizing 32 CFR 2002.20, SF 901 - CUI Cover Sheets is the best practice to protect printed CUI from inadvertent disclosure.
You can print these yourself but most machines, particularly rented laser printers will cost you more per full-color copy. Let us do it for you!

CUI marking and handling must be clear, consistent, and readily apparent to personnel who access, handle, store, or transport controlled information. These folders help support a more visible physical CUI handling process by making CUI document folders easier to identify during daily operations.
They are especially useful for organizations preparing for CMMC, DFARS 252.204-7012, NIST SP 800-171 alignment, internal audits, supplier reviews, or facility-wide CUI marking standardization.
For best results, use these folders as part of a broader CUI marking system that includes SF 901 cover sheets, CUI labels, controlled area signs, document storage labels, visitor access controls, and proper destruction procedures.
FAQ
Are these folders the same as SF 901 cover sheets?
No. These are physical folders with an SF 901-style CUI cover design. They are used to organize, cover, and identify printed CUI document packets. SF 901 cover sheets are sold separately.
Do these folders replace required CUI markings?
These folders help make CUI document handling more visible, but your organization should still follow applicable CUI marking, safeguarding, storage, transmission, and destruction requirements.
Where should these folders be used?
Use them anywhere printed CUI is handled, stored, reviewed, transported, or staged, including offices, engineering areas, manufacturing floors, program rooms, conference rooms, and controlled environments.
What should I pair these folders with?
Common pairings include SF 901 cover sheets, CUI media labels, restricted area signs, visitor badges, document storage labels, and CUI destruction container signs.
SF 901 Cover Sheet (PDF Writer) - SF 901 forms are in most cases a best practice for marking documents. This is extremely valuable in a production environment where these cover sheets can be seen from a long distance away. In some cases CUI documents have prohibitions against adding any markings to them. In these cases, cover sheets are necessary. By having a version you can populate and fill yourself allows you to prepopulate many of the blanks that never change and produce them on demand.

The SF 902 - CUI Computer and Digital Media Labels are standardized identification labels designed to secure and mark electronic media containing Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI). These labels are used in compliance with DFARS and 32 CFR 2002.20 requirements to alert handlers and custodians of the presence of CUI on various devices and media. The standard size label measures approximately 2.125 inches by 1.25 inches, providing a clear, visible designation.
-
Available in two quantity options: 500 labels per roll and 100 labels per roll, accommodating different operational needs.
-
Labels include the text "U.S. Government Property" to signify government ownership and secure handling.
How to Use SF 902 CUI Computer and Digital Media Labels
SF 902 CUI Computer and Digital Media Labels are used to identify computers, equipment, and digital media that contain, store, process, display, or provide access to Controlled Unclassified Information.
Apply SF 902 labels to devices and media such as laptops, desktop computers, monitors, external hard drives, printers, scanners, servers, network equipment, CDs, storage devices, filing cabinets, and other physical items used to handle or store CUI. The goal is to create a clear, visible reminder that the marked item is associated with CUI and should be handled according to your organization’s CUI procedures.
For best results, place each label in a consistent, easy-to-see location. On laptops, place the label where it is visible during use or transport. On monitors and desktops, place it near the front, side, or another visible surface. On external hard drives, CDs, or removable media, place the label directly on the item or its protective case when space is limited.
SF 902 labels are especially useful for defense contractors, manufacturers, engineering teams, IT departments, program offices, and facilities preparing for CMMC or internal CUI handling reviews.
These labels should be used as part of a complete CUI marking system. Pair them with SF 901 CUI Cover Sheets, CUI Restricted Area Signs, CUI Authorized Only Floor Tape, CUI Visitor Badges, CUI Authorized Destruction Container Signs, and CMMC asset labels to help create a consistent facility-wide CUI handling process.
Best used for: laptops, desktops, monitors, external drives, CDs, printers, scanners, servers, network equipment, filing cabinets, storage media, and other assets that contain, access, or display CUI.
Recommended use: Apply labels consistently across all CUI-related devices and media so employees, visitors, handlers, and auditors can quickly identify equipment that requires proper safeguarding.
These labels are suitable for application on laptops, desktop monitors, external hard drives, CDs, DVDs, filing cabinets, printers, and other storage media or physical items that contain or display CUI. They can also be placed on physical documents, such as photographs, drawings, and films, by marking the back of the item with an SF 902 CUI Media Label for clear identification.
The labels are made from durable materials designed to withstand handling and environmental factors, ensuring long-term identification. Care instructions include applying the label to clean, dry surfaces; removing any protective backing carefully; and avoiding exposure to extreme temperatures or harsh chemicals. The labels can be removed without damaging surfaces but are intended for secure, long-term use on government property.
Included in each pack are the labels themselves; any additional accessories or mounting options are not included. The labels feature a purple CUI color, which may vary slightly due to lighting conditions or screen resolution.
Overall, the SF 902 - CUI Computer and Digital Media Labels provide a reliable means to identify and protect CUI on electronic media and physical items, supporting compliance with government security standards and safeguarding sensitive information effectively.
